SIHA Story

The Strategic Initiative for Women in the Horn of Africa (SIHA) is a network of civil society organisations (CSOs) from Sudan, South Sudan, Somalia, Somaliland, Ethiopia, Eritrea, Djibouti, Uganda, and, most recently, Kenya. Founded in 1995 by a coalition of women’s rights activists, SIHA has grown substantially and is now comprised of close to 90 member organisations. SIHA is dedicated to building inclusive women’s movements united in their determination to effectively improve the lives of women and girls in the Horn of Africa (HoA).

SIHA’s vision is to foster social transformation in HoA to ensure that all women and girls live in a peaceful, just environment and are able to exercise their equal rights as human beings. As a sub-regional network of CSOs and grassroots activists, SIHA is in a unique position to move this vision forward a one of the very few indigenous coalitions born and nurtured inside the Horn. After more than 20 years of working to advance women’s human rights in highly patriarchal contexts frequently characterised by insecurity, SIHA’s expertise is rooted in its familiarity with the socio-political contexts in the HoA and the grassroots work of its members.

In particular, SIHA’s scope of work includes:

  • Reducing violence against women and girls;
  • Strengthening women’s access to justice and transforming negative and harmful religious and cultural dogma;
  • Empowering women economically toward realisation of economic, social and cultural rights (ESCR);
  • Engaging with and supporting women and girls in mixed migration flows across the HoA.
  • Building inclusive women’s movements;

SIHA, in close collaboration with its member organisations, conducts the above through multiple approaches including capacity building and production of knowledge, direct support to women in conflict and post-conflict situations, advocacy, research and campaigning at the regional and international levels to promote women’s human rights and gender justice and equality.
